For the last(?) blog post for Net-Rider, I wanted to talk about a couple things:
Updates to the Art-Bible
Production Choices/Team Members Decided
Overall Reflection on the project and current trajectory.
First off, here are some new inspiration images for the environment The Exurbs:
The Exurbs is a tight-knit suburban looking town not too far away from RyCORP Industries. It’s home to the biggest radio stations in cyberspace, RY.XM. A radio Station where Ryder broadcasts his “chats” with everyone in cyberspace. The town is lively and rusty. Home to uploads who want to get away from the city, only to still be plagued by Ryder's authoritative hold on this space.
Exurbs overall aesthetic is very liminal, and similar in inspiration to the Magdalena Bay Interactive Map.
Even though some of these images are brighter, it is very purple and darker overall.
The radio station is still functions properly, but is overall rusty and damaged
In Addition, I added more images to the art bible for other environments and the general vibe of the game.
Production Plan and Updates
I’ve been working on planning how I want to run the Studio in the fall for my last milestone. Even though I am someone who does production, I wanted to focus on this last to take into account the projects I’m currently working on and reflect on them.
Especially since this was my first year at Clark, I wanted to really see how the “Studio” class worked at my program.
This Studio will be run through Discord for overall management and tasks. I will be using channels and threads for each discipline to make sure that every person on my team is accommodated.
Something I always emphasize in my projects is encouraging project and off-topic discussion with the team. As I’ve been building this team (which I will talk about soon), I want to make it feel more as a team group rather than just co-workers. One of the ways I will be working with this is encouraging people to work (if they are able to) in the server VC, or together in a classroom outside of studio. Even if someone isn’t doing work but one is, It’s a great way to get instant feedback from someone and have more of a connection with them and the project.
There will also be sprints every other week, and I will be doing weekly check-ins with the team on Sundays through discord asking how their tasks are going.
In addition, I will be looking into Jira and Notion to see which program is best for working on tasks throughout the two semesters. I like both of these programs, but doing a deep dive in the summer will be the perfect chance to find the one that’s perfect for Net Rider.
Here is the team I currently have and/are confirmed for my Studio in the fall.
3 Artists
2 Programmers
1 Narrative
1 Audio
Production and Design (Me)
This team consists of some friends at Clark who I believe are incredibly capable in their craft. I’ve been already talking to them and giving them all the resources of NetRider, even though we wont start till the fall. I want to make sure they are fully refreshed with the project, and get any context that they may need.
Reflection and Future Plans:
As my semester ends, I plan on doing some work on NetRider over the summer. My friend Ren (one of the artists) plan on doing a lot of concept art and brainstorming for the characters/environments and bosses over the summer. This is to keep myself working on NetRider over the summer but at the same time start working with more ideas as my time slightly gets less busy.
I haven’t fully decided yet, but depending on how much work gets done over the summer, I may post more to this blog post.
Working on this project for the last two semesters has been an incredible experience, a small idea I had becoming this big is wonderful and exhausting.
I’m really looking forward to fully continuing this project in the fall and see where it ends as I finish my masters in May of next year.
