For the first part of my Blog Post, I’d like to expand on the overarching narrative and main character that was previously mentioned last week. I talked about this a bit in my slideshow.

The Opening Scene:

In this game the main narrative is told through the opening cutscene, the environment and the various boss fights throughout “Netcode.” The idea is to make this summary into it’s own “logline” as a main plot synopsis.

  • The game opens in the “Derelict Servers” where we see a USB stick drop into a pile of discarded technology. Days even years pass, and everything moves closer together and transforms into a singular being. (Some of the electronics in the junkpile will become recognizable body parts ex. lightbulb, cable, etc.)

    • This scene would be played at the start of each run, and after the first run you will be able to skip it if you want.

The Overarching Narrative:

  • Notable Key Elements about the story.

    • This game takes place entirely in “cyberspace”

    • It’s set in an actual world where technology never really progressed past the 200s.

  • Somebody has uploaded their soul into the hard drive. This “USB” stick doesn’t know who they are, where they are, or how they got there.

  • The main villain is the first person to be uploaded into cyberspace and becomes it’s creator which makes him god. He controls this cyber world as an eternal dictator. You are kind of a Virus (MALWARE) to this man’s world, challenging his influence and dominance. He needs to destroy you after you escape The Derelict Servers and start spreading.

    • Something that I plan on expanding on soon is the Villain, as it’s the focus for my next week.

The Main Character

  • The image below is the main idea for the “main character.” This character doesn’t really have a name as you go into cyberspace without any knowledge of who you are. Once you beat the first boss area, you are considered a “threat.” You are not supposed to go past the Derelict Servers at all, which is why everyone else in the other worlds considers you a sort of “Virus.” You will be referred to as Malware as no one knows what to call you.

  • The design for the main character does impact gameplay, as the cracked lightbulb is a way to signify your health. As you loose health, the light will get darker, however the initial crack will stay there. Your arm is a morphed Power Cable which will look more like a human arm in the final design, with your USB Stick being on your other hand.

This concept art was created by my friend Emma Millin. We we’re doing a brainstorming session when they we’re visiting.

Next Steps before Milestone 3 Presentation:

  • Fully continue organizing Trello and Design Doc

  • Work on Software Upgrades (Unique Mechanic) and have some examples for your presentation.

  • Map out Derelict Servers using Google Diagrams
